Name: Reyes, Ashley Period: 6 SHORT FORM – OUTSIDE READING TITLE: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest AUTHOR: Ken Kesey MAIN CHARACTERS (a clear, concise description of each character- one paragraph each): CHIEF BROMDEN: He is the narrator of the novel and has been in the mental hospital longer than anyone else. He feels as though he has lost himself ever since he was placed into the mental hospital for his illusions and his mental instability. He often just quietly observes everyone in the word and pretends as though he can’t hear or speak. He doesn’t get in anyone’s way, but somehow manages to find out a lot about people in the mental hospital. Due to how analytical he is, he quickly notices how different McMurphy is from everyone else.†¦show more content†¦He had too much faith in McMurphy, and when McMurphy didn’t side with him he was upset. Soon after he dies from drowning in a pool and it influences McMurphy to not give up and to not subside to Big Nurse’s unfair power. He Regains hope and starts bringing the rebellion back again all thanks to Cheswick. MINOR CHARACTERS (a clear, concise description of each – one paragraph each): THE LIFEGUARD: He had influenced McMurphy to start obeying or at least keeping quiet to whatever Big Nurse did. He made McMurphy realize that Big Nurse had control over him and that it was in his best interest to not lash out on her or taunt her. He sparked a change in the way McMurphy acted and he made McMurphy go through that period of being docile which was one of the causes for Cheswick feeling betrayed. BILLY BIBBIT: He was a man who was really attached to his mother and could be easily swayed by any mention of his mother just like a child. Later on he managed to get a girlfriend named Candy Starr. He went on many adventures with McMurphy and Bromden and was able to experience life a little more when he let his mother slip out of his mind. She wasn’t completely gone though; this was shown when Big Nurse threatened to tell his mom about what he has done and Billy goes into straight panic mode and kills himself by slitting his throat. It seemed as though he had some sort of deep psychological fear about what would happen if he disobeyed his mother.
